Many people wonder whether plantation shutters offer a complete blackout, The simple answer is nothing can create true ‘blackout’ except a room without windows or doors. The issue is that light will always find its way in, around or through your window treatments or between door and door frames.
Even blackout fabrics and specific blackout blinds do actually allow some light to penetrate the room as it will come in around the sides or through cord holes.
Shutters are actually one of the better window dressings for controlling the light in a room and can create a very dark environment when fully closed. In competition with venetian blinds and curtains, shutters are far more effective and when lightweight fabrics are used, shutters are many times better than roman or roller blinds.
There is so much more to light control than just for sleeping. Any room will benefit from window shutters, especially rooms that receive direct sunlight at some point during the day. Soft furnishings and furniture will no longer be liable to fade and watching television, using a computer or reading a book becomes so much easier; the louvres can be as open or closed as needed to allow for the perfect amount of light.
It is not just babies and small children that need to sleep during the day, shift workers are also faced with the need to get a good, long restful sleep during daylight hours. Plantation shutters will allow a small amount of light to seep between louvres and between panel and frame. However, this is often less light than other conventional window dressings and most clients will be pleasantly surprised at the increase in darkness which can be quite dramatic.
